Description of Clinical Expertise

pediatric radiation oncology; lymphoma; leukemia; proton therapy; reirradiation; total body irradiation; total skin electron therapy; stereotactic body radiotherapy

Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Michael J. LaRiviere is an attending radiation oncologist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. He did his undergraduate work in neuroscience at Amherst College, medical school at Emory University, and residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He treats pediatric patients and adult patients with hematologic malignancies, using conventional photon radiotherapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, proton therapy, reirradiation, total skin electron therapy, and total body irradiation. Dr. LaRiviere leads research programs in translational pediatric and hematologic radiation oncology, including preclinical work with FLASH radiotherapy and clinical trials to understand the interactions between immunotherapy and radiation, and chimeric antigen T-cell (CART) therapy and radiation. Dr. LaRiviere has received research funding from the Radiological Society of North America to explore how 3D-printing can be used to improve oncology education for medical students. He is a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), International Society of Paediatric Oncology (Société Internationale d'Oncologie Pédiatrique - SIOP), Paediatric Radiation Oncology Society (PROS), International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group (ILROG), and University of Pennsylvania Radiation Oncology Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Committee.
