Description of Clinical Expertise

Together with Ferris Hall, MD, at Beth Israel Hospital, I developed a method to localize breast lesions for surgical biopsy guidance from the aspect of the breast. This work was published in AJR and widely adopted for this purpose nationally thereafter.

Together with other members of the NCI-funded International Digital Mammography Development Group, I developed a new technology and proved the improved diagnostic accuracy of digital mammography over the previous standard, film mammography. This work was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and led to the widespread adoption of the technology for breast cancer screening.

Together with Barbara McNeil, MD PhD of Harvard Medical School and Laurie Fajardo, MD, I co-led an NCI-funded project, RDOG-5, which demonstrated that Fine Needle Aspiration was unreliable in evaluating nonpalpable breast lesions detected through imaging because in approximately 40% of cases it led to insufficient cytologic samples. Subsequent to the
publication of our paper in Cancer in 1998, this technology became much less frequently utilized for this indication and the other competing technology which we tested, percutaneous large-bore core needle biopsy, was more widely adopted.
