Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Cook's research and clinical interests focus on infant brain monitoring, neuroprotection, and neurodevelopmental outcomes of high-risk infant populations, particluarly those born prematurely or suffering from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Brain monitoring techniques applied by Dr. Cook to investigate cerebral activity and hemodynamics in these infants include electroenecephalography, near-infrared spectroscopy, and diffuse correlation spectroscopy. Dr. Cook organized the implementation of therapeutic hypothermia in the CHOP Intensive Care Nursery for infants with HIE, and is conducting long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up assessments on these and other graduates of the intensive care nursery.
