Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Grunwald is world renowned for his research on blood flow in the retina. He has helped to develop techniques to measure the circulation in the eye. In his laboratory, the Vivian Simkins Lasko Retinal Vascular Research Laboratory, non-invasive state of the art technology is employed to study the role of circulatory changes in the development of vision-threatening eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and others and the pharmacologic effects of medications on the human ocular vasculature and its circulation.

Clinical Trials
Dr. Grunwald is an investigator on the following trials:
•Complications of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Prevention Trial (CAPT)
•The Comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT)
•Retinopathy in Chronic Renal Insufficiency (RCRIC)

He is the Principal Investigator of two grants that will quantitate changes occurring in the retina due to diabetic retinopathy, systemic hypertension and age-related macular degeneration.

Keywords
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), choroidal circulation, diabetic retinopathy, ocular vasculature, optic nerve blood flow, pharmacologic effects, retina, retinal circulation, retinal vasculature
