Description of Research Expertise

My prior research has focused on understanding how non-clinical social determinants of health as well as organizational and policy variations impact utilization and outcomes in respiratory diseases. My masters in clinical epidemiology thesis examined the impact of insurance status on ICU utilization and outcomes using Pennsylvania hospital discharge data. This project found a decreased utilization and increased 30-day mortality for uninsured critically ill patients. I expanded on this research with an F32 NIH grant to study how MA insurance reform impacted critical care utilization and outcomes.

Description of Clinical Expertise

My clinical practice is focused on both Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, with a primary practice in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Additionally, I provide critical care, as well as pulmonary consultation at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center.

My outpatient pulmonary practice at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center includes expertise in tele-health.

I am a consultant at the Bucks County Health Department Chest Clinic in Tuberculosis.

Description of Other Expertise

I am leader within undergraduate medical education at the Penn Perelman School of Medicine.

I am a course director of Doctoring IC, a second year medical student course on professionalism, and serve on the leadership committee for Module 6.

I course director of the Pulmonary Course for second year medical students at the Perelman School of Medicine, having served as co-directory in 2019, and a small group preceptor since 2012.

I am course director for the HUP MICU externship clinically elective for fourth year medical students.

I continue to be course director for our simulation procedures course for medical students traveling to low resources areas. I helped develop this course, now required for all students working abroad, and helped to demonstrate a reduction in blood and body fluid exposures for students participating in the course.

In addition to my clinical practice in general pulmonology at the Philadelphia Medical center, I practice critical care medicine at HUP and at the VA. I am also a consult in Tuberculosis with the Bucks County Health Department.

Nationally, I am recognized for my leadership with in health policy. I am chair of the health policy committee of the American Thoracic Society, providing input for expertise to the ATS executive committee, to provide timely responses to proposed legislation, judicial hearings, and administrative actions, that impact our practice or the health of our patients with pulmonary and sleep diseases as well as those who are critically ill. We provide timely reviews within our peer review journals on issues of high relevance to our profession.
