Description of Clinical Expertise

Dr. Anderson is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine. He serves as the Physician Lead of the Critical Care Clinical Effectiveness Team and Associate Medical Director of Medical Intensive Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He currently attends on several critical care services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania including the Medical Intensive Care Units, the Critical Care Outreach and Procedure Service, and the Nocturnal Intensive Care Outreach Service. His clinical expertise include sepsis and septic shock, mechanical ventilation, acute respiratory failure and the acute respiratory distress syndrome, delirium, and post-intensive care syndrome.

Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Anderson's research focuses on identifying clinical and molecular risk factors for neurocognitive impairment and other organ dysfunctions in critical illness. Dr. Anderson oversees Penn's cohort study of delirium and cognitive impairment in sepsis survivors. Current studies focus on 1) the role of systemic markers of cerebral injury to identify survivors at high risk of neurocognitive impairment, and 2) neuronal excitotoxicity as a mechanism of neuronal death and neurocognitive impairment in sepsis survivors.

Dr. Anderson also collaborates with Dr. Nuala Meyer, Dr. John Reilly and Dr. Michael Shashaty on epidemiologic and molecular studies of acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute kidney injury in critically ill patients.
