Description of Research Expertise

1.Aldosterone effects on clinical outcomes with varying dietary sodium intake: The goal of this project is to evaluate the role of serum aldosterone and its effects on clinical outcomes of mortality, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease in individuals with low dietary sodium intake. Several different populations will be used to study this, including healthy individuals and individuals with albuminuria and CKD, both from prior cohort studies.

2. Urine potassium and association with clinical outcomes of mortality, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease using the MDRD Study database, Primary Investigator. This project is focused on identifying the risk of low potassium intake and adverse clinical outcomes in a CKD population.

3. Tubular injury as an early marker for CKD. This project aims to use urine electrolytes (for calculation of the urine anion gap) as a marker for tubular damage in early CKD, which we hypothesize will be related to progression of CKD. This work is an extension of previous publications that have shown that serum bicarbonate is a marker for progression of kidney disease.
