Description of Clinical Expertise

I am a hematopathologist and Director of the hematology laboratory at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I came to hematopathology originally because I wanted to care for critically ill patients alongside intelligent, curious clinicians in a collaborative fashion. I also enjoy interacting with our strong flow cytometrists, medical technologists, molecular pathologists, cytogeneticists, histotechs and pathology assistants, who make my work possible.

I am interested in quality and process improvement in the lab, and I am particularly fascinated by pediatric myeloid neoplasms.

Description of Other Expertise

On my first day as a lab director, I learned that our entire dayshift staff had been exposed to COVID-19 in the workplace and had to quarantine. Although no one became seriously ill, this experience framed my relationship with laboratory professionals, and highlighted their role as front line workers.

I work closely with Surabhi Mulchandani, Vice Chair for Laboratory Administration, and other leadership in the department, to develop sustainable, ongoing strategies to develop and strengthen the pathology workforce.
