Description of Clinical Expertise

I have cared for children with a variety of respiratory disease for over 25 years, but I have focused on children with cystic fibrosis and respiratory complications of prematurity.

Description of Other Expertise

In addition to advancing knowledge through research, I have helped advance care through leadership and service in the CF Foundation and American Thoracic Society, where I have served on and chaired committees focused on clinical issues such as telehealth, led the development of clinical practice guidelines, and headed quality improvement networks. I also am an Associate Editor for Pediatric Pulmonology and a member of the American Board of Pediatrics Sub-Board for Pediatric Pulmonology.

Description of Research Expertise

My research utilizes infant/preschool pulmonary function tests (PFTs) to study outcomes of pediatric respiratory diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. I have led several multicenter observational cohort studies using infant/preschool PFTs as the primary outcome measure. More recently, I have expanded my work to encompass imaging using chest MRI and the use of remote monitoring applications for patient reported outcomes. My other area of scholarly activity has been CF epidemiology, where I have used the CF Foundation Patient Registry for numerous analyses of outcomes and risk factors for more severe lung disease. I have had a particular interest in outcomes of CF newborn screening, especially those of infants with a positive newborn screen but inconclusive diagnostic testing. In summary, I have developed extensive experience and expertise in the design and conduct of multicenter observational cohort studies and interventional trials in infants and young children using advanced PFTs and imaging as an outcome measure, epidemiologic studies using patient registry data, and development of clinician resources such as clinical practice guidelines.
