Description of Clinical Expertise

Osama El Shamy MD is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine in the Renal, Electrolyte and Hypertension division. He completed his medical school training at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, residency in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and completed both his nephrology fellowship fellowships at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He also completed an additional year of fellowship at the same institution to in home dialysis (Home Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis).

Dr. El Shamy is the Medical Director at the DaVita Cedar Grove dialysis unit in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to joining Penn, he was an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University and George Washington University. During his time at Vanderbilt he established a dialysis fellowship and he served as Associate Nephrology Fellowship Program Director and the director of the ESRD service at George Washington.

Description of Research Expertise

Dr. El Shamy is a well-published author and authority in the field of home dialysis (peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis) with over 50 peer-reviewed research papers, book chapters and editorials. He is also frequently invited to organize and present at national and international meetings, particularly in home dialysis. Dr El Shamy is co-chair of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD)–North America Chapter Program Committee, treasurer of the ISPD North America Chapter, North America representative at the ISPD Council at-large, serves as both an author and reviewer for UpToDate’s peritoneal dialysis section, and a hub committee member on the NKF Home Dialysis Project ECHO. Other leadership teaching responsibilities include being a faculty member of Home Dialysis University and leading the ISPD - North American Chapter journal club series.
