Description of Clinical Expertise
My clinical expertise is in perioperative care of pediatric patients with acquired and congenital heart disease. Utilizing my broad training in pediatrics, pediatric critical care, and pediatric anesthesia, I provide comprehensive care for high-risk pediatric cardiac patients in the intensive care unit and operating room; I specialize in preoperative optimization, mechanical support, and resuscitation.Description of Other Expertise
In addition to patient care and clinical innovation/programmatic leadership, I am an expert educator. I am a popular lecturer and bedside teacher; I attribute that popularity to my accessible teaching approach. My teaching style is collegial, collaborative, and transparent around my own continued path of learning. I strive to build both learner knowledge base and confidence while being straightforward about my high expectations for both them and me. Modeling lifelong scholarship and inquisitive learning is the key to successful adult learner education.Description of Research Expertise
My academic focus is centered on two interrelated themes: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) mechanical circulatory support. These areas are central to my practice of cardiac anesthesia and cardiac intensive care. Also, both CPR and ECMO are areas that are evolving quickly and have significant mortality and morbidity risk, providing opportunity for discoveries that may directly affect patient outcomes. As my career focus has moved to leadership/program building, I have continued to participate in research efforts by supporting ongoing clinical studies as a team member and added an additional area of scholarship with focus on women’s leadership.Selected Publications
