Description of Research Expertise

Andrew J. King, PhD, FAMIA, is an Assistant Professor of Informatics in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics and Director of Precision Education Technology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. His scholarship focuses on using informatics to understand and optimize how clinicians and medical learners work, with prior research examining clinical workflows, teamwork, and the use of technology in complex clinical environments. His current work applies these principles to medical education, developing novel approaches to assess and support learner development using multimodal data, including (Type 1) traditional assessment data such as examinations and workplace-based assessments, (Type 2) clinical data generated during patient care such as EHR documentation, and (Type 3) interactional data capturing how learners work, including ambient transcripts, EHR interactions, gaze patterns, and other sensor-derived data. Dr. King is developing Penn Edge (Engine for Data-driven Growth and Excellence), a Learning Health Professions Education System (LHPES) designed to support precision medical education by integrating learner data, analytics, educational interventions, and expert judgment. His work seeks to advance competency-based medical education by enabling more continuous, individualized approaches to assessing and supporting clinical learning. He completed his BS in Bioinformatics and PhD in Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh, where he subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Critical Care Informatics and served as an Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine before joining Penn.
