From a clinical standpoint, Dr. Malhotra provides expertise in the care of brain and spine neurological disorders. His clinical goals focus on optimizing quality of life as well as life expectancy for disorders of the nervous system. He takes particular interest in the development of advanced approaches to brain and spinal lesion treatment (such as meningioma) and spinal column reconstruction and en bloc tumor resection (as with chordoma). Further he treats spinal degenerative disorders such as cervical and lumbar disc herniation and spondylolisthesis. He has developed endoscopic and robotic approaches for spinal degenerative disorders and cancers.
Description of Research Expertise
Dr. Malhotra's clinical research focuses on disparities in care. Whether studying spinal chordoma outcomes or the impact of household income, gender, or race on clinical outcomes, Dr. Malhotra leverages his expertise with the electronic health record. Dr. Malhotra founded, and leads, the EpiLog project. The EpiLog team of McKenna statistical fellows and Frazier scholars work to uncover disparities in medical outcomes. Where possible, the lab develops approaches to eliminate avoidable differences in outcome. In addition, as Co-Director of the Translational Spinal Research Laboratory, Dr. Malhotra develops restorative approaches to treat disc degeneration. His novel approaches have led to multiple awards and research grants. Through his work, Dr. Malhotra hopes to reduce the need for spinal surgery and offer better treatments for disc degeneration.
