The Stroke and Vascular Neurology Division is focused on expanding translational cerebrovascular research and developing integrated lifespan cerebrovascular care models across Penn Medicine and CHOP. Major priorities include growth of junior translational investigator programs, establishment of a brain and serum biobank for intracerebral hemorrhage patients, and development of clinical and translational cerebrovascular research infrastructure.  The proposed Center for Lifespan Cerebrovascular Care is intended to serve as a flagship integrated research and clinical care model spanning pediatric and adult cerebrovascular disease.

Our Comprehensive Stroke Center was the first to be accredited in the region and combines the talents of vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists to provide the best possible treatment, prevention, and recovery options for people with stroke and related problems. We are the leaders in patient-oriented stroke research in the region, providing pioneering opportunities for stroke treatment beyond standard clinical care.  We publish more research on stroke than all other regional hospitals combined.

Labs

  • Favilla - The Favilla lab is particularly interested in developing biomarkers and treatment targets that will facilitate personalized care that optimizes cerebral hemodynamics.

Clinical Trials

  • The Vascular Neurology group is running a variety of clinical trials focused on stroke prevention, acute stroke care optimization and stroke recovery. A rapidly expanding area of focus involves the use of innovative bedside imaging modalities to optimize cerebral hemodynamics.  Mitigating perioperative stoke is also a primary focus of this research team.  The Division currently has  active clinical trials supported by several faculty, including Brett Cucchiara, Chris Favilla, Steve Messe and Aaron Rothstein.
