Description of Research Expertise

Dr. Chang's research expertise is in immune mechanisms of viral persistence and disease pathogenesis with particularly focus in human hepatitis C and B viruses, +/- HIV confection--using high-dimensional single cell immune analysis via Flow and Mass Cytometry. As the Co-PI of a VA-funded genetic study of cardiometabolic diseases using the VA's Million Veterans Program (MVP), Dr. Chang is also examining the genetic basis of cardio metabolic disorders using big data involving clinical and genetic data. Since 2020, Dr. Chang has actively engaged in research involving COVID-19 given her expertise in clinical research as well as virology/immune pathogenesis.

Description of Clinical Expertise

Dr. Chang's clinical area of expertise is in the evaluation, treatment and study of patients with acute and chronic viral hepatitis B and C, with and without HIV coinfection. She established and directed the active GI/Liver clinic at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center in 1999-2012. She continues to supervise GI fellows and rotating students/residents in the GI/Liver clinic to date.

Description of Other Expertise

Dr. Chang is the Associate Chief of Research (ACOS/R&D) and Associate Dean for Research at the Philadelphia Corporal Michael J Crescenz VA Medical Center (CMCVAMC), which is academically affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. As such, Dr. Chang has the administrative oversight in developing VA-based and/or VA-funded research (e.g. via VA Career Development Award, VA Merit Review, Cooperative Studies Program and MVP research). She is also committed to mentoring VA-based researchers both locally and nationally.
