There are over 400 different types of dementia, and Penn Medicine is at the forefront of seminal discoveries that have uncovered the causes dementia in its various forms. Led by Edward Lee, MD, PhD, Penn Medicine scientists study rare forms of dementia such as vacuolar tauopathy, an early onset form of frontotemporal degeneration for which there is no treatment or cure.  Dr. Lee and his lab are currently developing and testing drug like compounds in pre-clinical experimental models that target VCP with the goal of developing novel therapies for rare diseases like vacuolar tauopathy and common diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
