Research Interests

I have over 25 years of experience in both theoretical and experimental aspects of magnetic resonance, including instrumentation and methodological development, and its biomedical applications.  Primary focus of my research is in the development of chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST), rotating frame relaxometry and multinuclear MR based technologies in investigating metabolic underpinnings of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, and to probe energetics in myocardium and skeletal muscle, and cancer. I have published over 150 peer reviewed journal articles, some of them in high profile journals including Nature Medicine and Nature Biomedical Engineering and made over 200 presentations in International scientific meetings. I teach two graduate courses in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, “Principles of Biological Nuclear Magnetic Resonance” and “Imaging Biomarkers”. I run a large interdisciplinary program on MR and optical imaging biomarkers in which I interact daily with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, clinicians, and collaborating faculty members. Over the years, I have trained fifteen graduate students, 32 undergraduate students and fifteen postdoctoral fellows, many of whom now hold senior positions in academia, industry and government.  I regularly host graduate students from different graduate groups in rotations and tutorials and also mentor residents and fellows in research training.  Beginning in 2004, we started a summer volunteer program for high school students interested in pursuing a scientific career, which trains more than 5 students per summer.
