About Our Program

The Center for Cognitive Therapy is an outpatient clinic with therapists who specialize in a type of therapy - cognitive therapy (also known as cognitive-behavioral therapy)- rather than in a specific set of disorders per se.

There are research areas in the Department of Psychiatry that specialize in specific disorders - for example, the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety or the Center for Studies of Addiction - where clinical studies are conducted, sometimes offering free therapy. The Center for Cognitive Therapy, in contrast, is a fee-for-service clinic, treating a wide range of disorders. When appropriate, we apprise our patients of opportunities to take part in research.

Disorders We Treat

Many of the center's clients are diagnosed with mood and anxiety disorders, such as:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Dysthymic disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Panic Disorder

Other diagnoses include:

  • Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Substance Use Disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Eating Disorders
  • Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders
  • Personality Disorders

Many clients carry more than one diagnosis. Others do not have a diagnosable disorder, but want to address problems in their relationships, with their jobs, or with school.

The Center for Cognitive Therapy generally does not conduct couples, family, adolescent or child therapy (though some exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis - talk to the Director, Dr. Cory F. Newman at 215-898-3466 about this possibility). In some cases, after the intake session, a prospective patient may be referred to a different facility, if it is believed that his or her needs can best be addressed elsewhere.
