Cognitive Therapy Training Program

Program Overview

The Cognitive Therapy Training Program is geared to current post-graduate current therapists who wish to significantly expand their therapy skills to include cognitive therapy and the cognitive model. To apply for this program you must be either a psychologist with a doctoral degree, a social worker with at least a master’s degree, or a psychiatrist with a medical degree and a completed residency in psychiatry. Trainees may receive training in cognitive therapy and/or diagnostic interviewing. (Note: Owing to federal regulations, clinical trainees who have a foreign passport [non-US] may apply for the diagnostic interview program but not the therapy program.)

Programs

The Cognitive Therapy Training Program has two components: The Therapy Training Program and The Diagnostic Interview Training Program. Trainees may apply for one or both programs.

In the Therapy Training Program, each trainee will be expected to see five patients a week and will receive one hour per week of individual supervision from a senior cognitive therapist. You may also opt to see ten patients a week and receive two hours of supervision. You will be trained in the treatment of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, etc.. This program has a rolling admission date.

The Diagnostic Interview Training Program involves training in conducting in-depth diagnostic interviews with a cognitive conceptualization. You will be trained to administer SCID 5 CV and SCID 5-PD, open-ended questionnaires, and structured measures such as the Scale for Suicide Ideation. A diagnostic write-up follows this interview. Two interviews a week are expected of the diagnostic interview trainees. Trainees will attend weekly supervision meetings to discuss diagnostic issues. Applications are accepted between the second week of December and the end of the first week in January each year. This program begins in June each year.

Cost

There is no cost for these programs. Neither is there remuneration for patients treated. This is an exchange of training for clinical services.

Scheduling

Therapy trainees see five to ten patients per week and receive one to two hours of supervision. We assume that treating patients and meeting for individual supervision will take the equivalent of one day per week of therapist time. Patients are not currently seen on Saturday or Sunday.

Diagnostic interview trainees will conduct two interviews a week and meet for supervision. Again, this should involve the equivalent of one day per week although all work need not be completed on a single day. Diagnostic interviews are not currently scheduled in the evenings or on Saturday or Sunday.

Length of Program

The Therapy Training Program lasts for one year. The Diagnostic Interview Program can last six months to one year. If you opt to do both, the training programs can be done concurrently or sequentially.
