Resources to Support Biomedical Research & Federal Updates
03/07/25
Dear Colleagues,
Attending today’s Stand Up for Science rally at City Hall was a powerful reminder of the importance of the work we do every day at the Perelman School of Medicine. It was inspiring to see so many familiar Penn faces in the crowd, which underscored how vital our mission is. What we do matters, and I wanted to share some resources that may provide useful background and help convey why continued support for biomedical research is crucial, especially during this time of intense focus on research funding.
Our colleague John Wherry, Chair of the Department of Systems Pharmacology and Translational Therapeutics, put together this white paper on the Importance of NIH Funding that outlines some facts, figures, and talking points.
Please also watch this excellent 5 minute video explaining Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs – Understanding the Real Costs of Research.
Penn Medicine is an engine for major progress in health and science and an organization that is deeply committed to the communities we serve – please take every opportunity to highlight and share the stories of how we are supporting our community through programs and initiatives in research, education, and clinical care. New stories appear every day on our Communications department website and Penn Medicine’s social media accounts.
Finally, University Communications has created a website that aggregates public information, messages, and campus resources related to recent federal actions. The purpose of this site is to centralize a broad range of public information and relevant campus resources for faculty, staff, and students.

Thank you,
Mike.
