Research Assistant Position at the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine

The Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine is a seeking a full time research assistant / psychology technician to assist with research-related activities on an NIMH funded collaborative study on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), Principle Investigator Dr. Edna B. Foa. This NIMH funded study will examine how hormones may alter activity within the brain’s fear network as well as the clinical response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for OCD.

Job Description:

Specific job responsibilities include helping coordinate all communication between the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety (CTSA) and Brain Behavioral Laboratory (BBL) at the University of Pennsylvania, along with preparation of pertinent materials for calls with collaborators at other sites outside of the University of Pennsylvania. Additional responsibilities will include: coordinating recruitment efforts, initial screening of all potential subjects, coordinating staff and subject availability for clinical assessments, imaging, and EX/RP sessions. In addition, the research technician will be responsible for monitoring the clinical data, checking for completeness and errors, and tracking subject flow. The technician will also run a fear extinction paradigm under the supervision of Dr. Moh Milad, escort subjects to scan sessions and conduct the fear extinction memory test in the scanner. The research technician may be trained in venipuncture and will collect the blood samples for hormonal assays. The research technician will be responsible for escorting participants between the CTSA and BBL for imaging appointments. The research technician will also be responsible for ensuring that the clinical data from the UPenn site are entered correctly, checking for completeness and errors, tracking subject flow, and ensuring regulatory compliance and adherence with Good Clinical Practice. Will also be responsible for additional duties as assigned. Work will be under the supervision of the OCD study coordinator (Dr. Jeremy Tyler) and the Principal Investigator (Dr. Edna B. Foa).


Bachelors degree and 0-1 year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Additionally, the successful candidate should have working knowledge of research methods and statistics commonly used in psychology and be prepared to carry out research tasks including literature reviews for grants and manuscripts preparation, database development and management, and conducting data analysis.  Applicants with fMRI experience and/or an interest in the study of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are preferred.
