Workshop Description: Excessive perfectionism in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom has shown a steady increase in prevalence over the past five years and is related to negative health outcomes. Specifically, excessive striving for perfection is associated with feelings of failure, guilt, indecisiveness, procrastination, shame, low self-esteem, and deficits in emotion regulation. In treatment settings maladaptive perfectionism can be observed in patients seeking treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Given the deleterious effects of perfectionism, researchers have continued to explore the role this transdiagnostic and multifaceted trait plays in the phenomenology of psychopathology. In this webinar, Dr. Jeremy Tyler will discuss the assessment of maladaptive perfectionism and how it may contribute to the presentation of common anxiety and related disorders. Additionally, Dr. Tyler will provide suggestions for addressing excessive perfectionism within the context of providing CBT for anxiety and related disorders.
