Penn Behavioral Health Inpatient and Assessment Services

Penn Behavioral Health offers inpatient treatment and emergency assessment at three locations within the University of Pennsylvania Health System. For information about each of these services, please select a link below:

Inpatient Services

  • 4 Spruce at Pennsylvania Hospital 
    A 24-bed secure inpatient unit at Pennsylvania Hospital providing comprehensive, acute, short-term assessment and treatment for adult patients with a wide variety of psychiatric symptoms and conditions. The service works closely with many mental health and social service agencies and private providers to meet the medical and social support needs of patients returning to the community.
  • 6 Spruce at Pennsylvania Hospital
    An 18 bed secure inpatient unit at Pennsylvania Hospital that provides comprehensive psychiatric treatment for adult patients with mood and anxiety disorders and geriatric patients 60 years and older with all types of psychiatric illnesses. The unit also specializes in treating patients whose psychiatric illnesses are complicated by active medical problems.
  • Wright 4 at Presbyterian Medical Center
    An 18-bed inpatient detoxification unit for adult patients with a primary diagnosis of addiction who require medically monitored treatment. The unit, which is staffed by a psychiatrist, registered nursing staff, mental health technicians, addiction counselors and social workers, offers both detoxification and rehabilitation services.
  • Wright 5 at Presbyterian Medical Center
    A 22-bed inpatient adult short-term psychiatric unit, which accepts all levels of diagnosis. We specialize in the treatment of patients with a co-occurring addiction problem secondary to the primary psychiatric problem. The unit is staffed by a physician, registered nurses, mental health technicians, addiction counselors and social workers. Call 215-662-2121 to coordinate an admission.

Emergency Assessment Services

  • Pennsylvania Hospital Crisis Response Center
    A 24-hour emergency center providing triage and evaluations, acute treatment of mental health and substance abuse conditions, provision of acute social services, and intervention for psychosocial problems. We also provide linkage with a wide range of clinical and social service providers. We are able to make referrals quickly and efficiently within the Penn Health System to dual diagnosis, geriatric psychiatry, general psychiatry and substance abuse services.
