Transactional Model of Stress and Coping

  • Introduce students to Karasek's Demand-Control Model of Work Stress (Karasek, 1979) and talk about ways in which the constructs of the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping may help to explain how people in the "high strain" quadrant differentially experience poor health outcomes.
  • How might people in jobs with low decision latitude (control) and high psychological demands cope with work stress and therefore reduce their likelihood of developing high blood pressure or heart disease?
  • Ask students to design a workplace intervention for high job strain occupations, using the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping
